“Samuele, stop pulling your sister’s hair or you’ll be in a time-out,” Anna says firmly, while a very charismatic Samuele sidles up next to his mom, lips pouting, arms crossed over his chest, the spitting image of Reno.

“Simona’s not sharing,” he says, looking so adorable that I want to snatch him up and pepper his face with kisses.

“Did you ask nicely?” his mom asks.

“It’s my toy.” Yikes, the terrible twos bring attitude.

“Did you ask for it back politely?” Anna has such patience. She drops to one knee to get on his level.

“But it’s mine,” he insists.

“Yes, it is. Simona is your sister, and remember that she loves you, so when she makes a mistake, we don’t hurt her, we teach her.” Anna ruffles his hair and guides him over to where Simona is sitting in the midst of a mini Toys “R” Us department store. With a gentle hand, Simona relinquishes the toy she’s clutching and hands it back to her brother.

Anna comes back to the sofa with her hands on her hips. “I swear, I need to go for referee certification. Samuele is becoming very demanding.”

“Simona did just snatch it out of his hand,” Olivia reminds her. “He’s Reno’s son. Do you really think he’s going to let anyone take what’s his?” She laughs, and I join in with a giggle.

Anna cracks a smile and sits beside me. “How are you doing?”

“Better today. I guess I just don’t get why they’d come after me now. Dad’s been an underboss for years and this hasn’t happened before.”

“You know Leo’s past, right?” Olivia asks, taking a sip of her coffee.

“But that was a long time ago,” I reply.

“Betrayal has no limit. Leo sacrificed himself for the good of Nostra Casa. At the time, he did it for the love of his brothers and never considered having a wife and family of his own one day. Now the situation has changed, and his brothers will look after him and you,” Anna says with confidence. “You know, Leo’s been my hero on several occasions.”

“He told me about being your bodyguard for a while.”

“It was his quick thinking that kept me from being killed, resulting in a car chase, and he got us through that too.” She winks. “He’s a special man.”

“Leo’s a man of few words. What’s it like being married to a man of mystery?” Olivia teases.

“He’s not so mysterious. Leo says what he thinks and speaks his mind. Business is business and is off the table for discussion, but if he ever needs to let it out, I’ll listen.” I smile and say, “I like him. I genuinely like who he is and what he values. He’s loyal, smart, and good to me and Dad.”

Olivia laughs. “You just described a puppy.”

“Leo is more of a wolf. I would never mistake him for a puppy,” I tell her. “You know, wolves are pack animals, devoted to their wolf pack, devoted to one mate. So much so that if their mates die, many lie by their side awaiting their own death.
